This piece began in Echizen, a small town in Japan, where I visited a washi paper maker and found this extraordinary piece of paper made from mulberry bark and then hand printed. The flow of the ink pattern feels to me like water. I left the printed areas untouched to honor the artist who created that gorgeous pattern and to show the movement of that art form. Then I composed in the empty places with the botanicals land has to offer. It is the edges, the connection points where life is most abundant, the contact spaces between field and forest, river and woods, ocean and land. This piece was meant to evoke life’s abundance while honoring the difference between water and land ecosystems.
