DCI 9up
I had the amazing privilege to be a Fellow at Stanford’s Distinguished Careers Institute (DCI) in 2024-5. It was the most extraordinary experience of attending Stanford classes, lectures, and symposia as well as meeting many interesting folks. I made a piece to celebrate this astonishing year and all the people associated with it. There were several formal events with centerpieces on each table, and for each of those there is a panel. Stanford is on the quarter system, and I was there for three of those quarters, making a panel for each season: autum, winter, spring. Many of us went together to South Africa to take a class; one panel is from that trip. The final panel is a word puzzle made from native plants in the Palo Alto, California area. Hidden in this panel are the letters DCI at least five times; how many can you find? The challenges with this piece were that for the four panels made from centerpieces, there was a limited palette and often the very same flowers, none of which I had not chosen. The panels are numbered 1-3 across the top left to right, 4-6 middle, 7-9 bottom.
